A deeply unsettling case has reached its conclusion in Flagler County, Florida, where a jury has convicted a former paramedic of rape, as confirmed by the State Attorney’s Office Seventh Judicial Circuit. The verdict was delivered on Thursday, bringing to light a grave breach of trust and duty.

The incident dates back to October 17, 2021, when James Tyler Melady, then 37 years old, was on duty responding to an emergency call. The call involved an unconscious and intoxicated woman who needed urgent medical attention and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital.

What unfolded next was documented in disturbing detail. A police report from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office reveals that Melady was caught on video setting up a recording device and committing the assault while on duty. These recordings, obtained by the Daytona Beach Police Department during an investigation into another potential crime, clearly show Melady in his fire department uniform, unmistakably involved in the reprehensible acts.

These videos were crucial in the investigation, as they visibly captured Melady’s face and actions, leaving no doubt about his identity or involvement. This damning evidence led to his arrest on September 11, 2024, marking the beginning of a legal process that concluded with Thursday’s conviction. The case underscores a profound violation of ethical and professional standards, shaking the community’s trust in those sworn to protect and serve.

Police say that in those videos, Melady’s face was “clearly depicted,” as well as “wearing a fire department uniform.”

Melady was arrested on Sept. 11, 2024.

While his sentencing will be announced at a later date, Melady faces up to 15 years in prison.

“The defendant not only abused our victim – he abused the position he held as a first responder,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said. “His sentence should reflect the damage he did to our victim and to the profession he shamed.”
