A tragic plane crash in central Mexico on Monday claimed the lives of 10 people, including three children, according to Adrián Hernández, the Civil Protection Coordinator for Mexico State.

The incident occurred in the industrial district of San Mateo Atenco, located just three miles from Toluca Airport and approximately 31 miles from Mexico City. The aircraft had departed from Acapulco, a coastal city on Mexico’s Pacific coastline.

Hernández reported that the private jet had a total of eight passengers and two crew members onboard. Following the crash, authorities confirmed the fatalities, which included three minors.

The plane reportedly attempted an emergency landing on a soccer field but collided with the metal roof of a nearby warehouse, igniting a significant blaze.

The warehouse, which housed fuel and gas tanks, necessitated the evacuation of the surrounding area, as stated by Cristóbal Castañeda, the Secretary of Security for the State of Mexico.

San Mateo Atenco’s Mayor, Ana Muñiz, informed Milenio Television that the fire prompted the evacuation of approximately 130 residents in the vicinity.

“It spun around like when a fan breaks loose,” explained Octavio Contreras, a local resident. “Then we heard the explosion, the truck even moved, and then we saw smoke coming out.”

The Attorney General’s Office later announced that it had launched an investigation.
