Kash Patel: Minnesota Fraud Scheme a 'Top FBI Priority'

The ongoing fraud scandal in Minnesota, involving childcare centers, has caught the attention of FBI Director Kash Patel. He acknowledged that this case is part of a broader, extensive investigation, and assured the public that it will continue to be a high priority for the bureau.

The scandal gained widespread attention after a video by YouTube journalist Nick Shirley went viral over the weekend. In the footage, Shirley confronts an employee at a purported learning center in Minnesota, which had received millions in aid yet showed no signs of genuine operational activity.

In response to this escalating situation, Kash Patel took to X to affirm the FBI’s involvement. He emphasized that the bureau was already actively investigating these fraudulent activities before they became a social media sensation.

“The FBI is aware of the recent reports circulating on social media about Minnesota,” Patel stated. “Long before the public discourse, we had already deployed additional personnel and resources to Minnesota to tackle large-scale fraud schemes exploiting federal programs. Protecting taxpayers and ensuring aid reaches vulnerable children remain top priorities for the FBI, both in Minnesota and across the nation.”

Further highlighting the FBI’s efforts, Patel pointed to their previous success in dismantling a $250 million fraud operation that misappropriated federal food aid designated for children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This investigation uncovered fake vendors, shell companies, and extensive money laundering linked to the Feeding Our Future network,” he explained. “The outcome was 78 indictments and 57 convictions, involving individuals like Abdiwahab Ahmed Mohamud, Ahmed Ali, Hussein Farah, Abdullahe Nur Jesow, Asha Farhan Hassan, Ousman Camara, and Abdirashid Bixi Dool, who faced charges ranging from wire fraud to money laundering and conspiracy.”

Patel concluded that these schemes are “just the tip of a very large iceberg.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson also revealed earlier this month that half of $18 billion in federal welfare funds, which supports 14 Minnesota-run programs since 2018, has been lost to fraud.

“Minnesota has become a magnet for fraud, so much so that we have developed a fraud tourism industry — people coming to our state purely to exploit and defraud its programs,” Thompson said. “This is a deeply unsettling reality that all Minnesotans should understand.”
