In a shocking case from Washington State, a man has agreed to plead guilty to the brutal murder of a woman during a home invasion that occurred as she lay asleep beside her husband and child. Christopher Johnson, aged 24, has acknowledged his role in this tragic event, which was part of a series of armed robberies sweeping through the state in 2022.

Johnson, who was already facing multiple federal charges, was deeply involved in a crime spree targeting Asian households across Washington during the spring and summer of that year. This crime wave reached its tragic peak with the fatal shooting of Irah Sok, a 36-year-old woman, on August 19, 2022. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington has announced that Johnson is expected to plead guilty to second-degree murder in Snohomish County Superior Court as part of a plea agreement.

According to an indictment reviewed by Law&Crime, Johnson was identified as a leader within a criminal network responsible for numerous acts of violence, robbery, kidnapping, and burglary. This group operated not only in Washington but also in Arizona and other locations. Their strategy involved targeting Asian households, which they perceived as vulnerable.

Investigations revealed that Johnson and his associates meticulously planned their attacks, using social media to identify and research potential targets. They would also conduct surveillance on these homes. Typically, their operations took place in the dead of night, between 2 and 5 a.m., where they would deceitfully present themselves as law enforcement to gain entry.

Prosecutors detailed the terrifying tactics employed by the group, stating, “They wore masks and used zip ties to restrain the victims – including children as young as 9 years old. They would steal any valuables they could find in these homes.”

The Sok family home became a tragic crime scene on that fateful August morning. Reports from the Herald Net indicate that Johnson, accompanied by two accomplices, entered the house before 3 a.m. It was during this invasion that Johnson fatally shot Irah Sok, who was asleep beside her husband and their 7-year-old son. The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office reported that Sok’s husband was forcibly subdued and restrained with zip ties by the intruders.

After Johnson and the other suspects “ransacked the victim’s belongings and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of luxury possessions,” they fled the scene. Sok’s husband was then able to escape and run for help; the little boy was uninjured.

Sok was a well-known photographer in the Everett, Washington, area who specialized in maternity and newborn photography. She opened up her own studio just months before her death.

Johnson pleaded guilty to federal RICO charges on Monday and is expected to be sentenced on May 6. Federal records indicate he is expected to plead guilty to murder in state court on Feb. 17.
