WILMINGTON, Del. – In a case drawing both local and national attention, William Stevenson, the former husband of Jill Biden, is scheduled to make a court appearance in Delaware this Tuesday. Stevenson faces serious allegations related to the death of his current wife.

William Stevenson, now 77, was indicted this month by a state grand jury on charges of first-degree murder. These charges stem from the death of Linda Stevenson, aged 64, who was discovered unresponsive in their home on December 28. Since charges were filed on February 3, Stevenson has been in custody, unable to meet the $500,000 bail requirement.

While details about his defense remain sparse, as court records do not yet list an attorney representing Stevenson, the proceedings are set to move forward with his plea. This legal drama unfolds against the backdrop of Stevenson’s past, including his marriage to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975.

Stevenson is perhaps best known for founding the Stone Balloon, a renowned music venue in Newark, Delaware, during the early 1970s. His past associations contrast sharply with the present circumstances he faces.

In contrast, Linda Stevenson was remembered fondly in her obituary as a devoted family woman and a passionate Philadelphia Eagles supporter. Her obituary, however, notably omits any mention of her husband, William Stevenson.

Linda Stevenson ran a bookkeeping business and was described in her obituary as a family-oriented mother and grandmother and a Philadelphia Eagles fan. The obituary does not mention her husband.

“One hug from her and all your worries would disappear,” her daughter, Christine Mae, wrote in a Facebook post. “The pain of losing her is paralyzing and the emptiness in my heart is an abyss.”

Jill Biden married U.S. Sen. Joe Biden in 1977. He served as U.S. president from January 2021 to January 2025. Jill Biden’s spokesperson has said she has no comment on the Stevenson case.
