On Tuesday, a spirited discussion erupted on a CNN panel regarding Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance at the Munich Security Conference. The debate centered on whether her performance was genuinely flawed or simply misrepresented by a snippet taken out of context.
The focal point of the discussion on CNN NewsNight was Ocasio-Cortez’s hesitant response to a question about whether the United States should commit military forces to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. Her response, peppered with pauses and hesitations, highlighted the complexities of longstanding U.S. policy on the matter.
CNN host Abby Phillip suggested that Ocasio-Cortez ought to have been better prepared for such a critical question. However, Phillip also noted that similar or even more significant gaffes have been made by former President Donald Trump on the international stage, implying that such missteps are not uncommon among high-profile politicians.
In contrast, left-wing podcast host Leigh McGowan rose to Ocasio-Cortez’s defense, pointing out that the congresswoman’s overall participation included many insightful comments that have been overshadowed by her brief stumble over the Taiwan issue.
“Stumbling over your words for 15 seconds is not the same as being incoherent or uneducated on foreign policy,” McGowan asserted, emphasizing that one moment should not define Ocasio-Cortez’s understanding or capabilities in matters of international relations.
‘Listen, stumbling over your words for 15 seconds is not the same as being incoherent or uneducated on foreign policy,’ she said.
Ana Navarro, an anti-Trump Republican, then made the statement that pushed the conversation off the rails.
‘She’s not a foreign policy expert,’ Navarro said, referring to Ocasio-Cortez.

‘Clearly,’ said former New York City comptroller candidate John Tabacco, another member of the panel.
Kevin O’Leary, a frequent guest on the show, went sarcastic with his response: ‘No, you don’t say. Come on, give her a break.’
‘You didn’t even know who was running in Texas, okay? So there’s a ton of things you don’t know Kevin, stop being so condescending,’ Navarro fired back.
At this point, multiple panelists were shouting over each other. Navarro managed to cut through and once again stick up for Ocasio-Cortez.
‘I think for her to be expanding her message, for her to be expanding her areas of policy interest are a good thing. She is one of 435 members of Congress. There’s a lot of them there that don’t come with a breadth of foreign policy,’ she said.
O’Leary argued that even the Democratic Party was disappointed in the performance of Ocasio-Cortez, who went to Munich looking to beef up her foreign policy chops ahead of a possible presidential run in 2028.
‘I’m sorry, it’s not a partisan issue. She was terrible. Get over it! Now maybe she’ll get better,’ O’Leary said.
Later on, Cari Champion, a journalist and sports commentator, tried to compare Ocasio-Cortez to Trump.

‘The reality is Kevin, is that she was taking a beat, and yes, she wasn’t great for less than 20 seconds, if you ask me, but I thought she was doing something that the President of the United States rarely does and that’s think before she speaks,’ Champion said.
‘I don’t recall him stumbling for 38 seconds,’ he said.
‘She was trying to get her words together, so she knew how to handle it appropriately,’ Champion replied.
In Munich, Ocasio-Cortez spoke at length about the rising tide of authoritarianism around the world and specifically accused Trump of having such tendencies, pointing to his threats to ‘colonize’ Greenland.
At an event in Berlin on Sunday, following the Security Conference, Ocasio-Cortez made yet another blunder when criticizing Trump for capturing Nicolas Maduro and deposing him as the leader of Venezuela.
‘Maduro canceled elections. He was an anti-democratic leader. That doesn’t mean that we can kidnap a head of state and engage in acts of war just because the nation is below the equator,’ Ocasio-Cortez said.
Venezuela is located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere on the northern coast of South America, bordered by Guyana to the east, Brazil to the south, and Colombia to the west.
