Middleburg man arrested after traveling to meet minor for sex, police say

A detective from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office played a crucial role in a recent operation that led to the arrest of a man under disturbing circumstances.

LAKE CITY, Fla. — Authorities revealed on Friday that a Middleburg resident was apprehended after he traveled to Lake City, allegedly with the intention of engaging in unlawful activities with a minor.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Luke Robert Qualls, had reportedly been in communication with an undercover detective for approximately one week, who was posing to be someone else.

During these exchanges, Qualls allegedly expressed his intent to travel and partake in sexual activities with what he believed to be a 14-year-old, and he is accused of sharing explicit images. These interactions provided enough grounds for law enforcement to secure an arrest warrant.

On March 12, Qualls’ vehicle was located as it crossed into Columbia County, where officers executed a felony traffic stop resulting in his arrest.

He now faces several serious charges, including attempting to meet a minor following online solicitation, distributing obscene material to a minor, using electronic communication for criminal purposes, and sharing harmful content with minors. Qualls was detained at the Columbia County Detention Facility, with bail set at $125,000.

“The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office encourages parents to remain aware of their children’s online communications with people they do not know,” the sheriff’s office says. “Parents are encouraged to stay engaged in their children’s digital lives and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.”
