Gavin Newsom slammed by Nick Shirley over alleged California fraud claims

In a heated exchange during a Fox News interview, conservative YouTuber Nick Shirley harshly criticized Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing the California leader of prioritizing fraudsters over investigating serious allegations highlighted in his viral video.

Shirley, who has recently gained attention for his online exposé revealing alleged widespread misuse of taxpayer-funded programs, labeled Newsom as “an enemy to the people of California.” In the interview, Shirley argued that instead of addressing the purported misconduct, the governor has chosen to target him.

“He’s actively supporting those committing fraud,” Shirley charged. “Meanwhile, he could be focusing on uncovering and stopping the fraud.”

The YouTuber further accused Newsom of avoiding accountability by ridiculing his efforts on social media, rather than taking the claims seriously.

“It’s baffling,” Shirley continued. “Why target the person exposing the fraud instead of those committing it?”

Shirley’s remarks follow a public spat with Newsom’s office on the social media platform X. State officials have dismissed his video, branding him as a partisan agitator, while Shirley has countered by accusing the governor of ignoring potential taxpayer exploitation and failing to investigate the allegations.

In his video, Shirley travels through parts of Southern California visiting home daycare sites and hospice-related businesses that he claims are receiving public funds, questioning whether some locations are legitimate after finding what he describes as empty offices or inactive facilities.

The video, which has racked up massive engagement online, alleges large-scale fraud involving programs tied to childcare and healthcare funding — though many of the claims have not been independently verified.

Still, Shirley argued on Fox News that the issue should transcend politics.

“These tax dollars don’t say right or left on them — they’re for the American people,” he said. “When people steal them, they’re robbing everyone.”

He also suggested Newsom should be working with him rather than attacking him.

“Why doesn’t he say, ‘Hey Nick, great video — how can we help?’” Shirley said. “That would be the common response.”

Instead, Shirley claimed the governor’s office has chosen to go on offense — escalating a social media clash that has only amplified attention around the video and it’s allegations.

The clash spilled onto social media where Newsom’s office and Shirley traded barbs over the viral video.

In posts on X, the governor’s press office mocked Shirley’s reporting and portrayed him as a partisan agitator, downplaying the claims in his video while suggesting he was pushing a political narrative.

Shirley fired back in multiple posts, accusing Newsom of refusing to take potential fraud seriously and doubling down on his claim that the governor was protecting bad actors instead of investigating them.

The online spat only fueld further attention around the video — and underscored the widening divide between Shirley’s allegations and the state’s response.

The California Post has contacted Newsom’s office for comment.
