Robert Mueller, former special counsel with the DOJ and FBI director, has died

Robert Mueller, who once led the FBI and served as special counsel for the Department of Justice, has passed away at the age of 81.

WASHINGTON — The world bids farewell to Robert Mueller, a distinguished former FBI director and special counsel, who has died at the age of 81.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce Bob’s passing,” his family shared in a statement released on Saturday. “We kindly request that our privacy be honored during this difficult time.”

In 2017, Mueller took on the role of special counsel to probe the suspected Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, scrutinizing potential connections between the Kremlin and Donald Trump’s campaign team.

Appointed by President George W. Bush just days before the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Mueller served as the FBI director until 2013. His leadership is lauded for shifting the bureau’s focus from domestic crime resolution to proactive counter-terrorism efforts.

During his tenure, he is credited with helping transform the bureau’s top priority from solving domestic crimes to preventing terrorism.

Trump posted on social media about Mueller’s death: “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead.” The Republican president added, “He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Mueller was born in New York City but was raised just outside of Philadelphia. He received his undergraduate degree at Princeton University in 1966. He later earned his master’s degree in 1967 from New York University, where he studied international relations. Prior to attending law school, Muller joined the military.

After graduating, he became an officer with U.S. Marine Corps and Reserves and served three years as a platoon leader in Vietnam. According to the FBI, he received the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He was a service member from 1966 until 1980 and rose to the rank of captain.

Mueller went back to school upon his return from Vietnam, graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Mueller married his wife, Ann, in 1966. Ann and Robert have two daughters, Melissa and Cynthia.
