DUI suspect passed out behind the wheel in auto-driving Tesla

A driver found himself in a precarious situation when he was discovered passed out in his Tesla, which continued to navigate city streets on autopilot. The incident unfolded as the Vacaville Police Department responded to reports of a seemingly driverless car cruising through town.

Authorities encountered the driver, clearly in no condition to be behind the wheel, at around 11 a.m. on a bright Wednesday morning. The scene inside the vehicle was telling: a pizza box and a collection of mini wine bottles littered the passenger seat, hinting at a reckless indulgence.

The police were alerted by a concerned citizen who had observed the black Tesla’s erratic behavior and notified officials of its location. Upon investigation, it became evident that the vehicle’s autopilot feature was engaged, while its occupant was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana.

A man passed out in the driver's seat of an auto-driving Tesla.
The Tesla was seen driving through city streets as the drunk and stoned driver slept behind the wheel.

In the passenger seat was a pizza box and a pack of mini wine bottles.

Initially, officers were unsure if the individual was experiencing a medical emergency or another issue. However, it soon became clear that intoxication was the culprit. The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.

The Vacaville Police Department reminded the public about the responsibilities of using advanced driving technologies. “California drivers may utilize modern assistive driving features, but they must remain conscious, alert, and sober,” the department emphasized.

The department also expressed gratitude towards vigilant community members, whose timely reports made a swift response possible. “Your vigilance plays a crucial role in enhancing street safety and elevating the quality of life for everyone in Vacaville,” they noted.

Commenters poked fun at the man’s misadventures while thanking cops for keeping them safe.

“That time when his vehicle had more situational awareness than he did,” one wrote.

“Glad no one was hurt. Great job of getting this guy off the road,” another added.
