JSO: Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crash on Atlantic Boulevard; suspect at large

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect vehicle involved in the incident as a black Toyota Camry from the years 2012 to 2014, according to Sgt. Robert Hungerford.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Authorities in Jacksonville are actively searching for a suspect following the tragic death of a man in his mid-40s, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Atlantic Boulevard early Saturday morning.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. in the 6500 block of Atlantic Boulevard.

Sgt. Robert Hungerford of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported that the victim was cycling westward on Atlantic Boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle, which witnesses described as a dark-colored sedan.

Emergency responders from Jacksonville Fire Rescue arrived promptly at the scene, but unfortunately, the man was declared dead upon their arrival.

“The driver who hit the bicyclist did not stop to offer assistance, make a call for help, or notify the police about the accident,” Hungerford stated. “Instead, the vehicle involved sped away, heading south on Glynlea Road.”

Based on the initial investigation, Hungerford said the suspect vehicle is a 2012-2014 black Toyota Camry that will have damage to its front end from striking the bicyclist.

Hungerford said Atlantic Boulevard at Glynlea Road will remain closed in both directions until around 10:35 a.m. Saturday, as detectives conduct the on-scene portion of the investigation.

This crash marks the 52nd traffic fatality in Duval County this year, and the 4th involving a bicycle, according to JSO.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the identity of the driver of the suspect vehicle is asked to contact JSO at 904-630-0500, or email jsocrimetips@jaxsheriff.org.
