8 children dead in mass shooting that began as domestic dispute, police say

A tragic series of events unfolded in Louisiana early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of eight children across multiple residences. The horrific incident stemmed from a domestic altercation, ultimately concluding with the shooter being fatally stopped after a police chase, as reported by local authorities.

The young victims, whose ages ranged from just 1 year old to around 14, were among ten people shot, including two adults, according to Chris Bordelon, a spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “I just don’t know what to say, my heart is just taken aback. I cannot begin to imagine how such an event could occur.” The magnitude of the crime scene left many, including Bordelon, shocked, as he described it as “an extensive scene unlike anything most of us have ever seen.”

In the wake of the shootings, the suspect fled by stealing a car at gunpoint just half a block from where the initial violence erupted. His attempt to escape was thwarted by law enforcement officers following a pursuit, as detailed by Bordelon.

A poignant image from the Shreveport Police Chief’s office captures the gravity of the situation. A map marked with pins indicates the locations of murders throughout 2025, a chilling reminder of the violence that culminated in the mass shooting on April 19, 2026. This photograph, taken by REUTERS’ Kathleen Flynn, underscores the tragic narrative of a city grappling with such senseless loss.

The man stole a car at gunpoint a half block away from the original crime scene, leaving the scene of the shootings and getting pursued by police, according to Bordelon.

A shootout between police and suspect occurred after a traffic stop in Bossier Parish, resulting in the suspect’s death.

“This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” said Tom Arceneaux, mayor of the city in northwestern Louisiana with about 180,000 residents. “It’s a terrible morning.”

Officials said they were still gathering details about the crime scene, which extended across three locations. Some of the children shot were related to the suspect, according to Bordelon.

Louisiana State Police say their detectives have been asked by Shreveport police to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

In a statement, state police say no officers were harmed in the shooting.
