On Monday, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin criticized Rep. Rosa DeLauro for her “uninformed” comments after a heated exchange during a congressional budget hearing. The Connecticut Democrat, in a moment of frustration, suggested Zeldin drink weed killer, drawing attention to her strong opposition.
DeLauro, known for her distinctive purple hair and as the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, accused Zeldin’s budget proposal of resembling a “climate change denier’s manifesto.” She challenged the EPA chief to explain why the agency seemed to be neglecting its responsibility to shield Americans from the impacts of climate change.
However, Zeldin, who previously served as a Republican congressman from New York, stood firm. “I’m adhering to the law,” he retorted, referencing Section 202 of the Clean Air Act and questioning where it mandates action against global climate change.
DeLauro, aged 83, was momentarily speechless in response.
Continuing his defense, Zeldin inquired, “Are you familiar with the Loper Bright Supreme Court case?” suggesting a legal precedent to support his stance.
âLoper Bright. Supreme Court case. Are you familiar with it?â Zeldin asked.
The flustered congressman admitted she was ignorant of the case but argued Zeldin didnât have âthe right to say climate change does not exist, that itâs a hoax, and thatâs where this administration is coming from.â
âI know youâre upset. You donât know what Loper Bright is. Do you know what the major policies doctrine is?â Zeldin challenged DeLauro, adding, âYouâre a member of Congress, you should know.â
DeLauro snapped after Zeldin rattled off a couple more major Supreme Court cases that the Democratic lawmaker appeared unaware of.
âWoah. You know, youâre here because you need money from us,â she screamed, wagging her finger at the Trump administration official. âSo halt for this second and wait for the question and answer the question!â
Zeldin insisted that he answered the question and accused the congresswoman of being “somebody who likes the microphone onâ but doesnât actually read federal statutes.
âI donât have to listen to this BS!â DeLauro raged.
âBS? You think I made up these cases?â Zeldin shot back.
âYeah, I think you have made up a whole lot,â DeLauro responded.
Later on in the hearing, when things appeared to settle down a bit, DeLauro accused the Trump EPA of not doing enough to go after polluters.
Zeldin opened up his binder and started comparing the Trump administrationâs enforcement actions to the Biden administrationâs when DeLauro interjected.
âGlyphosate,â she said, referring to the active ingredient in the pesticide Roundup.
Zeldin advised that if the congresswomanâs cup was filled with glyphosate, she should not drink it.
To which DeLauro responded, âMaybe you should try doing that.â
âNothing infuriates an uninformed Congressional Dem more than when they realize they voluntarily triggered a debate with someone who actually knows what they are talking about, reads federal statute and adheres to Supreme Court precedent,â Zeldin wrote on X after the hearing.
âTodayâs self-implosion by [DeLauro] was quite remarkable to witness,â he added.
On DeLauroâs suggestion he drink weed killer, Zeldin reacted: âWhen you donât have anything good to say, some advise to just not say anything at all.â
He argued DeLauro âapparently believes that when you donât have anything good to say, you should instruct the person you are debating to kill themself.â
DeLauroâs office did not immediately respond to The Postâs request for comment.
