Manhunt for retired special forces soldier accused of shooting wife enters 5th day in Tennessee

Authorities in northern Tennessee are engaged in a relentless five-day manhunt for Craig Berry, a retired special forces soldier accused of attempting to murder his wife. The search has intensified as Berry, who is charged with attempted murder, remains elusive in the dense woodlands.

The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office has highlighted Berry’s extensive survival skills, noting his background in special forces. “He is highly skilled in survival tactics and is familiar with this area,” they emphasized. Berry’s physical fitness and proficiency as a swimmer and diver add to the challenges faced by the search teams.

According to the sheriff’s office, Berry was last seen on a trail camera dressed in camouflage, armed, and carrying additional ammunition. Officials caution that while Berry is believed to be without a phone, they are not dismissing the possibility that he might have assistance from external sources.

In response to the threat he poses, the sheriff’s office has joined forces with the U.S. Marshals Service, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Together, they are planning an exhaustive search operation targeting the eastern side of Kentucky Lake, aiming to locate and apprehend Berry efficiently and safely.

The sheriff’s office said Berry is armed and believed to be carrying extra ammunition. He was wearing camouflage clothing when he was spotted on a nearby trail camera several days ago, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said it doesn’t believe Berry has a phone, but investigators also haven’t ruled out the possibility that he has received outside help after the alleged shooting.

The sheriff’s office said it is working with the U.S. Marshals Service, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and plans to conduct a “very detailed search” of an area on the eastern side of Kentucky Lake this week.

Stewart County Sheriff Frankie Gray said finding Berry could be a “lengthy process.”

Berry has been on the run since the early morning hours of May 1, when deputies responded to a report that Berry’s wife had been shot during a domestic dispute. She was hospitalized at the time, and her condition Tuesday was unclear.

Stewart County is located along the border with Kentucky, some 75 miles northeast of Nashville.
