Chicago shootings this weekend: At least 10 shot, 2 fatally, in gun violence across city, police department says

In the quiet suburban neighborhood of Joliet, Illinois, a tragic altercation unfolded on Friday afternoon, leaving one man dead and another facing serious charges. Authorities have reported that the incident stemmed from a heated dispute between two men who were familiar with each other.

The disagreement took place outside a residence on the 200-block of Nicholson Street. The individuals involved were identified by police as 60-year-old Lyndon B. Hunt and 58-year-old Willis Ellis. Eyewitnesses and investigators indicate that the confrontation began on the front porch. As tensions escalated, Hunt reportedly moved from the porch into the yard, where the situation took a deadly turn.

At this critical juncture, it is alleged that Ellis pulled out a firearm and shot Hunt. In a move that suggests a moment of clarity amid the chaos, Ellis himself called 911 to report the shooting. Authorities were quick to respond, arriving at the scene shortly after 4:30 p.m. on that fateful day.

Tragically, the bullet had struck Hunt in the stomach. Despite being rushed to St. Joseph Medical Center in critical condition, Hunt succumbed to his injuries later that evening. The loss of life has shocked the community and left many grappling with the suddenness of the event.

In the aftermath, law enforcement officials were thorough in their response. They retrieved the handgun involved in the incident and took Ellis into custody for further questioning at the Joliet Police Department. Subsequently, he was charged with Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, marking a pivotal turn in the case.

Beyond the legal proceedings, Ellis’s own well-being became a concern, as he was transported to Silver Cross Hospital due to an existing medical condition. He remains in the hospital, now under police surveillance, as the investigation continues to unravel the full details of this tragic event.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office continues to review the case, police said.

Investigators asked anyone with video footage or information to contact the Joliet Police Department Investigations Division at 815-724-3020. Those wishing to remain anonymous may contact Will County Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734 or submit a tip online at crimestoppersofwillcounty.org.
