In the quiet community of Bermuda Dunes, California, a tragic discovery has prompted an investigation by Riverside County authorities. A couple, Karen and Donald Whitaker, aged 79 and 80 respectively, were found dead in their home last Friday under circumstances that have raised unsettling questions.
The couple’s friend, Joy Miedecke, has expressed a troubling suspicion: the Whitakers may have been victims of a scam involving someone impersonating the well-known actor, Tom Selleck. This fraudulent interaction reportedly began innocently enough with text messages and soon spiraled into what seemed to be an intimate, albeit deceptive, relationship.
According to Miedecke, the impersonator managed to gain Karen Whitaker’s trust by pretending to share a personal connection, claiming they had dated a mutual acquaintance. This false familiarity quickly ensnared Karen, who began to invest emotionally in this fabricated part of her life. “She was living and breathing this part of her life,” Miedecke remarked, noting how the scammer’s daily barrage of texts became a noticeable part of Karen’s routine.
As the fraudulent relationship deepened, Karen is said to have initially sent small sums of money that gradually grew to substantial amounts. Alarmed by the situation, friends of the Whitakers reached out to law enforcement in the days leading up to the couple’s deaths, hoping to intervene before it was too late.
Miedecke highlighted the urgency and despair felt by those close to the Whitakers, saying, “Realizing that this is happening to a friend of theirs or a neighbor or a relative… and they’ve got to stop this.” The tragic outcome has left the community stunned and searching for answers as the investigation continues.
“Realizing that this is happening to a friend of theirs or a neighbor or a relative .. and they’ve got to stop this,” said Miedecke.
Investigators have not publicly identified any suspects and are continuing efforts to determine who may have been involved and whether the deaths are directly tied to the suspected scam.
ABC affiliate KABC reached out to Selleck’s publicist. There is no evidence that Selleck had any knowledge of the incident.
