Palm Bay's Controversial Decision: City Council Halts New Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

PALM BAY, Fla. – In a decisive move, Palm Bay officials have enacted an ordinance that prevents the establishment of new medical marijuana dispensaries within the city limits. This decision reflects a growing concern among city leaders about the proliferation and strategic placement of such establishments, particularly those emerging near sensitive areas such as daycares.

The deputy mayor, while voicing support for small businesses, expressed apprehensions regarding the rapid increase in dispensaries and their proximity to places frequented by children. These concerns were pivotal in his proposal of the new ordinance aimed at curbing further expansion of these facilities in the community.

During discussions, the city attorney outlined two possible courses of action for the council to consider. The first option was to impose a ban on any new dispensaries. The alternative was to regulate existing dispensaries in the same manner as pharmacies, which would involve more stringent oversight.

  • Ultimately, the council voted in favor of the ban, with a 4–1 majority supporting the motion. This decision effectively halts the opening of any new medical marijuana dispensaries in Palm Bay, addressing the growing unease about their current distribution and density within the city.

  • Treat existing dispensaries as pharmacies

The motion passed 4–1, meaning no additional medical marijuana shops will be allowed in Palm Bay.

One speaker urged council members to consider veterans who use medical marijuana for PTSD, saying:

“Keep in mind we do not want to hurt our veterans who use medicinal marijuana for PTSD.”

Another person supported the ban, saying:

“I’m thankful we’re getting rid of things that may cause vets to see things that aren’t there and hear things that aren’t there.”
