Helicopter footage captures Florida man allegedly abandoning child during high-speed chase from deputies

A Florida man was arrested this week after dramatic video captured him fleeing a traffic stop, crashing into another vehicle, and leaving a child behind as he ran from Orange County sheriff’s deputies.

Authorities said deputies tried to stop 24-year-old Jason Kenon on Tuesday. He was driving in Orlando with an adult passenger and two young children, ages 1 and 4, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said Kenon, who had multiple active warrants, sped off instead of pulling over. Video and police accounts show him weaving through traffic as deputies pursued him on the ground while a sheriff’s helicopter tracked the vehicle from above.

Helicopter footage released by the sheriff’s office shows Kenon attempting to maneuver around a black SUV stopped at a sign before slamming into the back of it. Despite the crash, he kept driving, officials said.

The chase then moved into a residential neighborhood, where Kenon stopped long enough for the adult passenger and the 1-year-old child to get out. Deputies said the 4-year-old also tried to exit, but Kenon accelerated again before the child could escape the vehicle.

Kenon was then shown stopping near a building, getting out of the car and lifting the child out of the backseat. The child was seen following Kenon as he ran away from police.

Eventually, Kenon jogged through an alley, kicked his shoes off his feet and then began running barefoot in the opposite direction from the child, leaving him behind, according to the video.

Seconds later, Kenon ran directly into the road and tried to scale a fence that led into a wooded area. Two police cars had already converged, with deputies ordering him down to the ground.

Another deputy went over and recovered the nearby child, who was crying and holding Kenon’s shoes. Both children did not have any injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

According to court records, Kenon faces seven charges, including aggravated fleeing and eluding, two counts of child neglect, leaving the scene of a crash, reckless driving, possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Separately, in December 2025, Kenon was sentenced to 94 days in jail by a judge in Osceola County for burglarizing a building and felony grand theft in the third degree. He had pleaded no contest to the charges.

It is unclear which active warrants the Orange County Sheriff’s Office was pursuing Kenon for during this incident. News Agency reached out to the department for comment.
