Investigators said the man was biking along the sidewalk when he heard gunfire and then realized he had been struck.
Police said he suffered a gunshot wound to the upper leg and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
People walking in the park on Tuesday said they tend to avoid the city late at night, but added that violence can sometimes shape an unfair perception of Chicago.
“You reach a point where you get diminishing returns on any extra security that you could provide,” said Kevin Daly, a former Chicago resident. “Every city has issues or places that are unsafe or times where it’s not safe to be in certain, yeah, every city has to deal with that every week. So, I don’t think it’s something that is particularly unique to Chicago.”
“I don’t know that we feel comfortable walking around too much at night, but definitely during the day we were comfortable going for a walk and seeing the sights,” Paul Schrock, who is visiting Chicago, said.
According to data from the Chicago Police Department, this marks the fifth person shot in the Loop community, zero people were shot as of this date last year.
Area Three detectives are investigating.
