This is exactly the kind of matchup that gets the pulse racing.
Any time France are on the World Cup schedule, it is hard not to sit up a little straighter. They have been outstanding throughout the tournament, playing with a swagger and control that has made them look like the strongest side in the competition so far.
Didier Deschamps’ pursuit of a third consecutive World Cup final, and the chance to close his spell in charge with a second title as manager, could hardly have begun more impressively. France won all three of their group games and, in truth, looked frighteningly sharp while doing it.
There surely were not many teams eager to draw France in the round of 32, but someone had to take them on. That task falls to Sweden.

To be fair, this Sweden team is far from weak and contains plenty of quality. Still, the heavy defeat they suffered against a Netherlands side that has since exited the tournament is difficult to ignore.

Of course, matches are not decided by reputation alone. France still have to deliver on the pitch and avoid letting confidence turn into complacency.
So, with the scene set, let’s get into it.
