DoorDash driver completes food delivery after being struck by suspect Torrance Whitaker in Houston police chase: VIDEO

HOUSTON — A DoorDash driver in Texas is drawing praise after finishing a food delivery moments after she was hit by a vehicle.

Video shared exclusively with ABC13 Eyewitness News, our Houston sister station, shows the delivery driver approaching a home when a gray sedan being pursued by Houston police strikes her.

A DoorDash driver got the job done despite being hit by a car during a nearby police chase. Cameras captured the moment she was hit, along with the suspect’s arrest.

“I was on the phone with my husband, and I just hear somebody crash,” said Lily Portillo, whose security cameras recorded the startling scene. “So I’m like, wait a minute, I heard something from police. When he came out from my door, I think it was HPD parked on my mulch, like what happened here!”

Police identified the suspect as Torrance Whitaker. After hitting the driver, authorities said Whitaker ran from the vehicle and tried to hide in the backyards of several homes in the Greenspoint area.

Neighbor Steve Jones said his cameras also captured part of the chase, including Whitaker climbing over his back fence as Houston police officers and a K-9 followed close behind.

“He went through two more yards, and came out two more houses down the front yard bushes, and the dog brought him out,” Jones said. “And I thought it was Live PD!”

The video shows a police K-9 eventually catching Whitaker before officers took him into custody.

As the chase unfolded, the DoorDash driver could be seen taking a moment to gather herself before picking up the order and bringing it to the doorstep of the home where she had parked.

“It’s amazing how the girl just delivered the food. I asked her if she was okay, and she said she was okay,” said Portillo. “She needs a big tip. I really hope somebody finds her and hope she’s okay.”

Court documents show Whitaker, 34, was wanted for burglary and was fleeing from police after an attempted traffic stop in the 13000 block of Northborough Drive.

According to court documents, Whitaker was charged with aggravated assault in connection with the collision with the delivery driver.

Eyewitness News spoke with the driver, who did not want to be identified, who said she’s in a lot of pain, but thankfully has no broken bones. She confirmed she was working as a DoorDash driver at the time of the incident and said she is looking into filing a claim against Whitaker’s car insurer.
