Gotham FC star Jaedyn Shaw is inspiring the next generation of players

WHIPPANY, N.J. — Gotham FC is preparing for a landmark night at The Queens Classic, an event that carries major significance for the club and for women’s sports. “The Queens Classic is the first-ever women’s sporting event in Citi Field,” said Jaedyn Shaw, the Gotham FC midfielder and rising soccer star. The 42,000-seat ballpark, best known as the home of the New York Mets, will welcome Gotham FC for a nationally televised matchup against the Washington Spirit on Wednesday, July 15, on ESPN. The game, a rematch of the 2025 NWSL Championship, will also be the first professional women’s soccer contest ever staged at Citi Field. “I think it’ll be so fun to play in front of so many fans,” Shaw said. “It’s such an insane atmosphere, and obviously that’ll help us on the field.” For Shaw, the occasion is meaningful beyond the final score, reflecting her growth as both an elite athlete and a visible role model for young players. “One of the most rewarding parts of playing at this level is how you get to be a role model for the next generation of players coming up,” she said. “I’m very proud of my background. Being African-American and Asian-American is something I take a lot of pride in, and I find it really cool to be that representation for the next generation. I didn’t necessarily have that growing up.” Gotham FC vs. Washington Spirit will be broadcast Wednesday, July 15, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. Tickets for The Queens Classic are available through Gotham FC’s official website or via Gotham FC vs. Washington Spirit – MyProVenue™.
