Visitors at a busy New Jersey amusement park were left shouting in fear when a thrill ride suddenly stopped, leaving passengers suspended upside down in midair.
The Wipe Out ride at Playland’s Castaway Cove on the Ocean City Boardwalk malfunctioned on July 5, trapping riders above the ground for roughly five to seven minutes, according to Storyful, which reported the incident Wednesday.
“Get me down,” one distressed rider cried out in footage of the frightening scene, a clip that has since spread widely online.
“You’re alright, honey, you’re alright,” a woman called back from below, attempting to calm the shaken passenger.
On the ground, people waiting to board could only watch as the stranded riders remained stuck on the stalled attraction.
The tense moment was recorded by mother Caitlin Gulli, who said, “This was the second ride that evening that had malfunctioned, so I was very concerned about this safety of my three children, who were all riding rides that night.”
Online, the woman’s attempt to reassure the rider quickly became one of the most talked-about parts of the video.
“Lmfao, ‘you’re alright honey would have sent me over the edge,” one TikTok user joked.
It’s not known what caused the ride to break down.
Riders on Wipe Out are raised into the air on an arm and are spun around. The ride features some high-intensity inversions.
Playland’s Castaway Cove is open from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m. throughout August, and is home to 32 rides – including family-friendly attractions and thrill coasters.
It dubs itself as Ocean City’s oldest amusement park.
A four-alarm fire ravaged the park’s arcade in January 2021, forcing a temporary shutdown.
