Why Jewish Voters Could Decide Michigan’s Senate Race

– Jewish voters emerge as a pivotal bloc in Michigan’s high-stakes Senate race
– Abdul El-Sayed promotes support from pastor who previously praised Louis Farrakhan
– Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says Democrats are “absolutely not” doing enough to confront antisemitism

A growing number of lifelong Michigan Democrats are warning that the party risks losing a crucial share of Jewish voters in the state’s closely watched Senate contest. Critics alarmed by progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s anti-Zionist positions say some voters are now looking to Republican Mike Rogers as a safer alternative. With more than 100,000 Jewish voters in Michigan — a state decided by roughly 19,000 votes in 2024 — even a modest shift could carry major consequences for Democrats and potentially reshape control of the Senate.

New aerial footage is drawing attention to a network of massive 2,000-year-old reservoirs that once helped supply Jerusalem with water. The ancient site has become the focus of a broader debate involving historic preservation, cultural heritage and competing claims of sovereignty.

El-Sayed is also facing scrutiny after highlighting an endorsement from Detroit pastor Horace Sheffield, who has previously described Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan as a “truth teller.” Farrakhan has long been condemned for antisemitic rhetoric. The controversy has deepened because El-Sayed’s campaign paid $75,000 to Sheffield’s nonprofit for consulting services, raising fresh questions about political outreach, campaign strategy and the baggage that can come with influential local alliances.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, is publicly criticizing her own party and says she will skip the upcoming state Democratic convention because of security concerns. Nessel has accused party leaders of “absolutely not” doing enough to address antisemitism and has objected to allowing members facing criminal charges tied to alleged antisemitic threats to attend. She argues the party is failing to protect civil discourse, turning the August gathering into a flashpoint.

At the United Nations, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon is pushing back forcefully against accusations about starvation and child malnutrition in Gaza, calling the claims a “blood libel” fueled by Hamas propaganda. Danon pointed to a recent UN-backed survey that he said shows child malnutrition has fallen back to pre-war levels. He also accused anti-Israel critics of relying on distorted data while Hamas, according to Israeli officials, has diverted humanitarian aid and resold supplies at inflated prices.

: George Deek, Israel’s first special envoy to the Christian world, writes that, while Israel faces anti-Christian extremism that demands prosecution, these isolated acts do not define the nation. Unlike the declining Christian populations across the Middle East, , growing, and fully integrated—serving as judges, diplomats, and leaders—proving that localized bigotry does not reflect the country’s true character.

“Right now, however, it feels as though extremism on the left is not only becoming louder, but increasingly normalized. That has created a frightening moment for American Jews and certainly for the Jewish community here in Michigan.” – Rabbi Aaron Starr of Congregation Shaarey Zedek in suburban Detroit.
