CHICAGO — Communities across northwest Indiana spent Friday clearing debris, assessing storm damage and waiting for power to be restored after a violent round of severe weather tore through the region.
For many residents, recovery could stretch on for weeks. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has issued a statewide disaster emergency, and the National Guard is assisting with recovery efforts after the National Weather Service said six tornadoes touched down in northwest Indiana on Tuesday.
ABC7 AccuWeather Meteorologist Jaisol Martinez said a few showers were possible early Friday before conditions were expected to turn mostly dry for the remainder of the day.
Drivers were urged to use caution, as some roads could remain slick. Several crashes were reported during the early Friday morning hours.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for LaSalle, Grundy, Kankakee, Newton and Jasper counties until 10 a.m. Friday.
