Costco’s Fan-Favorite Sweet Treat Is Finally Back on Shelves After 2 Years

Costco shoppers are celebrating the return of a fan-favorite Kirkland Signature item that has been missing from warehouse shelves for two years.

Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips are back after Costco temporarily discontinued them in 2024, a move prompted by surging cocoa costs that made it harder for the retailer to keep the baking staple at the value price members expected.

The familiar 4.5lb red bags have started showing up in select Costco warehouses across parts of the US, though availability remains inconsistent for now.

News of the comeback began circulating after sharp-eyed shoppers spotted the product in stores, with a post on Reddit’s Costco forum quickly drawing more than 2,000 upvotes.

According to the original poster, the chocolate chips are listed under item number 1331846 and have been seen priced between $11.99 and $12.49, depending on the warehouse location.

One delighted shopper summed up the mood with a simple response: “And there was much rejoicing.”

Another Costco fan wrote: “YES!!! Bakers rejoice!”

The excitement continued in the comments, where one customer added: “I AM SOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!! This made my night!”

For some, the return is particularly welcome because they had been trying to avoid paying considerably more for rival brands while Costco’s own version was unavailable.

‘I was just checking yesterday and didn’t see it,’ one shopper wrote, while another said they had been ‘rationing’ their final bag.

A different commenter said they had been forced to buy Ghirardelli chips instead, describing the cost as ‘absolutely ridiculous’.

And there was another reason some shoppers were particularly pleased: Costco’s Kirkland chips had developed something of a cult following among consumers who refuse to buy Nestle products.

Several Reddit users cited ethical concerns and labor practices as reasons for avoiding the Swiss food giant.

Cocoa futures soared amid a combination of poor harvests, crop disease and weather problems affecting major producing regions, particularly West Africa. Prices climbed to record levels, putting pressure on chocolate manufacturers and retailers around the world.

Rather than simply passing the full increase on to shoppers, Costco opted to temporarily remove its Kirkland Signature version.

That was a particularly significant decision because value is at the heart of the Kirkland Signature proposition.

Kirkland Signature is Costco’s own private-label brand and has been around since 1995.

The name was chosen after the company was unable to trademark ‘Seattle Signature’, with Kirkland being the Washington city where Costco had its headquarters at the time.

Costco says the purpose of the range is to provide products that are as good as or better than leading national brands while offering savings of at least 20 per cent.

The range has since grown into one of the biggest private-label brands in the US, spanning everything from food and household products to clothing, pet supplies and even gasoline.

Costco says its buyers are involved in developing Kirkland products and that the label represents its own stamp of approval. That helps explain why the chocolate chips’ disappearance caused such a fuss.

While cocoa prices remain volatile, they have fallen substantially from the extraordinary highs seen during the 2024 chocolate-price crisis.

That has given Costco and its suppliers more room to bring the Kirkland product back.

And there is evidence that production is already under way, with shoppers reporting the red bags appearing at warehouses in states including Texas, Connecticut, Oregon, Washington and Virginia.

The chocolate chip comeback also follows a familiar Costco pattern: products can vanish from shelves when costs, supply problems or changing demand get in the way, only to become highly sought-after cult favorites once they’re gone.

Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy Peanut Butter has recently made a comeback, while fans have continued to campaign for the return of other discontinued favorites, including Country French Bread and French Comte cheese.
