A Florida beach trip turned devastating for a 25-year-old woman who authorities and relatives say was struck by another vehicle after pulling over on the side of the road, leaving her with injuries so severe that part of her leg had to be amputated.
Jasmin Selby was “seriously injured” in the hit-and-run crash, her father wrote in a GoFundMe created to support her recovery.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, according to regional Fox affiliate WOFL.
The incident happened on the morning of Aug. 17 as Selby was traveling along a rural stretch of Colonial Drive in Orange County, Florida. The roadway, also known as State Road 50, spans east-west across a large portion of the state.
Selby and a friend were on their way to Cocoa Beach when they reached the area near Christmas, Florida, and she pulled over, according to the fundraiser. They were roughly 45 minutes from the beach, where Selby had hoped to see the sunrise before attending a job interview scheduled for later that morning.
She said she turned on her hazard lights and high beams before going to retrieve her phone from the back of her vehicle. Her father wrote that “the next thing she remembers is waking up in the hospital screaming.”
According to the fundraiser, Selby’s “left leg was damaged beyond surgical repair” and doctors amputated it above the knee. She also sustained major fractures to her left thumb and hand that required plates and screws, as well as emergency abdominal surgery that left dozens of staples across her abdomen.
As she was “in the middle of transitioning between jobs” when she was hit, she reportedly has no health insurance and is facing “overwhelming medical bills along with the many other expenses that come with a life-altering injury.”
According to Selby’s father, Robert Selby, no one stopped after the crash, “and no one has been held accountable for what happened” to his daughter.
“That’s my child out there that they left in the middle of Highway 50, in the middle of nowhere,” the father told WOFL.
Jasmin Selby was left thinking how the culprit could do it again.
“He or she was able to just drive away and leave me for dead … who knows what could happen to the next person,” she said.
