SoCal doctor plays cello for veteran before double-leg amputation

A compassionate California physician found an unforgettable way to steady a veteran’s nerves before a life-altering operation — by bringing his cello to the bedside and filling the hospital room with music.

The U.S. Army veteran was at a Loma Linda medical center in August, preparing for the amputation of both legs, when his doctor arrived with a surprise far beyond the usual pre-surgery visit.

“This incredibly kind doctor @quinnstagram21 went out of his way to bring his cello into the hospital the day before my grandfather’s surgery and play just for him,” the veteran’s granddaughter shared in an Instagram post.

Leon Allan Loyd, the Army veteran at the center of the touching moment, told ABC 7 the private performance left a powerful impact. “It was just fantastic. It gave me more strength and more help when I went through the surgery,” he said.

Loyd said the music helped him face the procedure with renewed courage. “So I had this strong confidence, and strong faith that this was going to actually be okay, and that losing my legs, I could still participate in life,” he added.

Loyd underwent the double-leg amputation in August due to a rare disease. On the day before surgery, Dr. Paul Kalmansson of the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans’ Hospital offered to play cello for him, hoping the calming performance would help ease anxiety ahead of the difficult operation.

Kalmansson’s musical background runs deep. According to his Instagram bio, he studied music at Yale and the Cleveland Institute of Music before going on to attend Loma Linda University School of Medicine.

The heartfelt bedside concert, later posted by Loyd’s granddaughter, quickly drew widespread attention online as viewers praised the doctor’s unusual act of kindness.

Believing music inspires hope, the doctor selected the Prelude in G Major by legendary composer Johann Sebastian Bach for his bedside performance.

He said he wanted Loyd to know that he cares and that “I’m thinking about them, and I can do that better through music that I can through words.”
