US restricts government travel to Mexican border city over threat concerns

U.S. government personnel are facing new movement limits in Nogales, Sonora, after officials cited security concerns in the Mexican border city.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico issued a security alert Saturday, announcing restrictions on official government activity in Nogales because of an unspecified threat.

According to the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales, threat-related information prompted officials to limit U.S. government travel and operations in the city to essential movement only, and only during daylight hours.

The consulate said the advisory was also intended to notify U.S. citizens about the potential danger and the updated security posture.

Sonora’s State Security Board said it reached out to U.S. consular representatives after the warning was released. However, state officials said they had not been given details pointing to a specific threat and had no confirmed information indicating a direct risk to the public. Authorities added that preventive security operations would remain in place in Nogales.

The security message also pointed Americans to the current U.S. Travel Advisory for Sonora, which remains at Level 3, meaning travelers are urged to “Reconsider Travel.”

U.S. citizens in the area are advised to stay vigilant, pay close attention to their surroundings, take shelter if an incident occurs, update relatives and friends about their safety, comply with directions from Mexican authorities and keep monitoring local news for the latest information.

U.S. lawmakers also encouraged people in the area to pay attention to the warnings issued by the U.S. government.

“For Americans in or near Nogales – or who may have family members or friends there: please heed the guidance and warnings from the U.S. government,” Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., said on X.

“We are praying for the safety of U.S. citizens and personnel who may be in harm’s way,” he added.

It remains unclear what threat in Nogales triggered the security warning.
