San Francisco landlord accused of killing tenant lists home for rent

Unable to sell the San Francisco home where his tenant was killed, a Bay Area landlord accused in the fatal shooting is now trying to lease the property for $6,300 a month.

Philippe Chagniot, 68, is seeking a renter for the house at 2518 46th Avenue after allegedly killing 58-year-old Eric Bigone, his tenant, in mid-May outside the property in San Francisco.

The 1,200-square-foot home is advertised as a three-bedroom, two-bath residence with “beautiful hardwood floors, abundant natural light, and an updated interior,” according to the rental listing. It was first listed at $8,000 per month before the asking price was lowered to $6,300.

Authorities have alleged that Chagniot spray-painted surveillance cameras near the scene before setting a fire on top of Bigone’s car. As Bigone responded to the blaze, prosecutors say, the landlord shot him twice from behind with an automatic Mac-10 firearm.

After the shooting, the suspect was reportedly seen riding away on a bicycle.

Chagniot was charged with murder and ordered held without bail, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office said in May.

In a wrongful death lawsuit, Bigone’s son, Dino Bigone, claimed Chagniot killed his father in an effort to empty the property so it could be sold. A judge later blocked the Chagniot family from selling the home, though the family was allowed to place it on the rental market.

The property is owned by the Chagniot 2007 Family Trust, which includes Chagniot and his wife.

A woman who toured the listing said she saw that the home was owned by a family trust and grew suspicious. She also saw the news stories about the killing on the internet and was disturbed.

“I wasn’t looking for if someone was killed in the lease. My money would presumably be benefiting this family,” the prospective tenant told The San Francisco Standard.

“That’s such bulls–t. I’m upset, sick,” a neighbor who was outraged about the whole situation also said.

A GoFundMe for Bigone’s son and grandchildren has been made and has raised about $13,000 of its $65,000 goal.
