Charlie Sheen burnt off eyebrows with 'big lighter' Chuck Lorre claims

Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men, has revisited Charlie Sheen’s notorious 2011 meltdown, the crisis that ultimately led to the actor’s dismissal from the hit sitcom.

The 73-year-old showrunner discussed Sheen’s highly publicized spiral during Tuesday’s episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. At the height of the controversy, Sheen popularized phrases including “winning,” “tiger blood” and “Adonis DNA.”

Sheen, now 61, was television’s highest-paid actor and at the peak of his professional success when substance abuse and mental health problems began to overshadow his career.

Speaking to 59-year-old podcaster Joe Rogan, Lorre recalled the warning signs during the show’s eighth season. “Well, in the eighth season it was clearly we were in trouble,” he said, describing a call from Sheen’s manager explaining that the actor could not attend rehearsal.

“His BIC lighter blew up and he has no eyebrows,” Lorre was told. “Now I’m somewhat naive to some of this stuff, but I know BIC lighters—they don’t blow up.”

Representatives for Sheen have been contacted for comment but have not yet responded.

At the time, Two and a Half Men was television’s most-watched comedy, averaging about 14.7 million viewers. Lorre acknowledged that the sitcom’s extraordinary success made it easier for him to overlook the growing problems surrounding its star.

“I was determined to stay in denial. I just didn’t want to know. I wanted to believe it was all okay,” he said. “I was absolutely, you know, forcefully oblivious.”

“I just wanted to believe it was all going to be okay just because the show was doing so well,” Lorre added.

By then, Sheen had built an extensive film résumé and was earning nearly $2 million per episode for his role on the CBS sitcom.

Yet behind the scenes, the actor was moving deeper into addiction and mental health struggles, coming after his divorce from his third wife, Brooke Mueller.

Sheen subsequently gave a series of widely watched interviews, including an appearance on ABC’s 20/20. In them, he appeared hyperactive, scattered and unrestrained.

The glassy-eyed star made headlines with declarations that he was “winning,” possessed “tiger blood” and had “Adonis DNA,” along with a series of other rambling remarks.

As network executives attempted to contain the situation, Sheen sought a larger salary and became embroiled in a public dispute with CBS figures, including Lorre and then-network chief Les Moonves.

Lorre told 59-year-old podcaster Rogan: 'Well, in the eighth season it was clearly we were in trouble. It was it was you know when his manager calls me and says Charlie can't come to run through today at rehearsal'

Sheen was fired from Two and a Half Men in March 2011 and was replaced on the series by Ashton Kutcher.

Unknown to the public at the time, Sheen had been diagnosed with HIV that same year- a fact he would later reveal in 2015. When he finally announced his diagnosis, the actor revealed that since 2011 he had shelled out nearly $10 million to keep his HIV status a secret.

The 2011 incidents were not Sheen’s first or even second brush with substance abuse. Charlie has been arrested on drug and assault charges in the past and in 1998 he overdosed on cocaine, suffering a stroke.

He’s also been to rehab several times for his issues.

At the time, the sitcom was the most-watched comedy on television, averaging roughly 14.7 million viewers but there was obvious trouble brewing with Sheen but Lorre admitted to having a blind spot as the series was doing so well

After his firing from Two and a Half Men, Sheen performed a series of sold-out one-man shows at Radio City Music Hall with hordes of fans wearing tiger blood T-shirts and screaming ‘winning’ from the audience.

On the heels of his breakdown, Sheen seemed to have righted himself and starred in the series Anger Management on FX for two seasons but then largely fell off the map.

Last year he was at the center of a two-part Netflix documentary miniseries titled AKA Charlie Sheen, which documented his rise to fame and life of excess, which led to his personal struggles.

Lorre went on to have two other massive hits on CBS in The Big Bang Theory, which aired from 2007 to 2019 and spin-off Young Sheldon, which aired from 2017 to 2024.
