Hurricane Trudy strengthens to Category 2 as it approaches Mexico coast

MIAMI — Trudy intensified into a Category 2 hurricane Saturday as it headed toward Mexico’s southwestern and west-central Pacific coast, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

A hurricane warning covered the coastline from Manzanillo in Colima state to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco. The latest National Hurricane Center update put Trudy’s maximum sustained winds at 100 mph (155 kph). The storm was located about 205 miles (330 kilometers) south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes and 115 miles (180 kilometers) south-southwest of Manzanillo, moving northwest at 10 mph (17 kph).

At the same time, Typhoon Champi strengthened to a Category 4 storm as it approached Guam.

Trudy’s center was expected to reach the vicinity of Mexico’s coast Saturday and pass nearby into Sunday. Following the latest advisory, Mexico issued a tropical storm warning for Las Islas Marias and canceled a similar warning for the coastline south of Lazaro Cardenas.

The Mexican navy warned mariners and coastal communities to take extreme precautions as large waves, intense rainfall and the potential for swollen rivers, flooding and landslides threatened vulnerable areas.

Authorities in Colima said the overall threat remained low but cautioned that additional heavy rain could cause damage because the soil was already saturated after a series of storms along the Pacific coast.

Trudy was forecast to produce 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters) of rain through the weekend, with isolated areas receiving about 15 inches (38 centimeters).

Elsewhere in the Pacific, Champi became a Category 4 typhoon while moving west toward Guam at 15 mph (24 kph).

By Saturday night local time, the typhoon was about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Guam and had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph), the U.S. National Weather Service said.

Champi was expected to pass south of Guam early Sunday local time and continue strengthening during the day. Guam and Rota remained under a typhoon warning, while Tinian and Saipan were covered by a tropical storm warning and a typhoon watch.

The governors of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands requested emergency disaster declarations Friday. If approved by U.S. President Donald Trump, the declarations would make federal assistance and funding available for emergency protective measures.

Airports, harbors and some medical facilities across the territories were closed. Federal Emergency Management Agency updates Saturday said relief resources were not expected to reach the islands for three to five days.

The territories were also continuing to recover from Super Typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi, which hit in April and July, respectively.
