A majority of Americans favor energy independence, saying the United States should no longer depend on foreign countries for oil and natural gas, according to a new survey.
The poll, conducted for the Council for a Secure America, found that 53% of American adults support energy independence, while 18% oppose it.
The survey asked 2,200 participants how strongly they agreed or disagreed with the statement: “America’s energy independence makes our country safer because we no longer rely on foreign countries for energy, such as oil and natural gas.”
The findings are based on polling conducted Sept. 25-27, as the United States faces high prices amid the ongoing war in Iran. The results are also consistent with a June 2025 CSA poll, in which 56% of Americans expressed support for energy independence.
Energy independence also received strong support as an economic issue. Fifty-seven percent agreed that it promotes growth by creating high-paying jobs, shielding Americans from foreign price spikes and keeping more dollars in the country. Another 31% had no opinion, while 13% disagreed.
The organization also asked respondents to choose which of two statements more closely reflected their views: “America is safer when it makes its own energy and does not rely on other countries for oil or natural gas” or “America is part of a global energy economy and doesn’t need to produce all of its own energy.”

Seventy-one percent said the United States should produce its own energy, compared with 29% who favored participation in a global energy economy.
Respondents were also asked: “To what extent do you agree or disagree, if at all, with the following statement? It’s time for common sense permitting reform to allow America’s energy infrastructure to meet our growing electricity needs and make energy more affordable.”
Overall, 67% supported reforms that would allow the nation’s energy infrastructure to meet rising electricity demand and make energy more affordable. Seven percent disagreed, while 26% had no opinion, according to the survey.
State law prohibits deep excavation and hydraulic fracturing for natural gas, a process commonly known as “fracking,” because of environmental concerns.
The Council for a Secure America supports American energy independence in all its forms, viewing it as a way to strengthen US security.
The group also supports the US-Israel partnership and the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between the Jewish State and Arab countries including the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Bahrain, Sudan and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Morning Consult conducted the survey for CSA by interviewing 2,200 American adults from Sept. 25-27. The poll’s margin of error is 2.1 percentage points.
