Melanie Lynskey denies wild rumor about Two and a Half Men salary

Melanie Lynskey has offered a candid account of what she actually earned on Two and a Half Men, days after her former co-star Holland Taylor criticized the sitcom and CBS over its pay practices.

The 49-year-old actress responded in the comments beneath a clip of 83-year-old Taylor discussing her experience on the series during an appearance on the podcast Alchemy with Anthony Mason.

One fan praised Taylor’s performance and claimed she had been paid only $75,000 per episode, while Charlie Sheen allegedly earned between $1 million and $1.8 million, Jon Cryer made $575,000 and Angus T. Jones received $300,000 per episode.

The commenter also claimed Conchata Ferrell earned $150,000 per episode and that Lynskey eventually made between $200,000 and $300,000.

Lynskey stepped in to correct what she described as an “insane” rumor about her salary.

“Hey! Sorry, but this insane number is floating around on the internet and I must tell you how wrong it is,” she wrote. “I only did 63 out of 262 episodes of that show. I made literally one tenth of that stated number per episode — started at $20,000 with, I believe, a 5% raise each season, but more than half of the episodes I did were in the first two seasons.”

On the sitcom, Lynskey portrayed Rose who was Charlie Harper's (played by Charlie Sheen) devoted, obsessive neighbor and stalker who was endearingly devious (Above, Sheen and Lynskey in an episode which aired in 2003)

She added that her largest paycheck from the show was approximately $43,000 for a single episode during its final season — and that figure was before deductions.

“This is before agents, managers, business managers’ cuts, and taxes, so you take home around 50% of what you are paid,” Lynskey explained.

Lynskey appeared as Rose, the intensely devoted and occasionally manipulative neighbor of Sheen’s character, Charlie Harper.

Although she said the series provided valuable financial stability, the actress rejected the idea that she had earned millions from her time on the show.

“I was extremely grateful for the job and for the money. It allowed me to pay my small mortgage and bills, and to work in independent movies while building a career,” she wrote. “But there is this insane idea that I made millions of dollars, and it’s so ridiculous.”

She added: “If Holland’s talking about it, I’ll talk about it too” followed by a laughing emoji.

Lynskey was referring to Taylor’s recent revelation that she was never offered a raise during her time on Two and a Half Men.

“They never paid me very well on that show,” Taylor said during the podcast appearance.

The veteran performer, whose longtime partner is Sarah Paulson, explained that her pay had remained at roughly the same level she had received on a series nearly eight years earlier.

Taylor said that, despite receiving four Emmy nominations for her portrayal of Evelyn Harper — the mother of Sheen’s and Jon Cryer’s characters — she never received a pay increase during her six seasons as a regular cast member.

“They never gave me a raise. They usually do, just as a courtesy,” Taylor said. “I loved a lot about that show, but they were not full of courtesies.”

She recalled that producers were surprised when she chose not to renew her contract in 2009.

“I said, ‘I don’t want to be under contract anymore,’ and they said, ‘We can’t pay you any more money,’” Taylor recounted.

“First of all,” she continued, “I said, ‘You could actually pay me the cost of this building, but don’t bother, because I don’t want to continue on under contract.’”

Taylor instead agreed to return occasionally as a guest star, telling the producers that she would visit the series when she chose.

“I mean, I did play the boys’ mother,” she pointed out to podcast host Anthony Mason.

Taylor claimed CBS was unwilling to raise her salary because executives wanted to avoid giving her “a raise of any significance.”

Taylor also noted that Cryer “quadrupled his salary” when his contract was renegotiated.

After leaving her regular role, Taylor continued to make occasional guest appearances on the sitcom.

She ultimately appeared across all 12 seasons of Two and a Half Men, which ran from 2003 until 2015.

In September 2025, Cryer, now 60, also discussed the significant difference between his pay and Sheen’s during the show’s most successful years.

Speaking in the Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen, Cryer said he earned about one-third of Sheen’s salary.

According to Forbes, Sheen was earning $1.9 million per episode at the height of the show’s popularity.

Cryer, meanwhile, was reportedly paid $620,000 per episode, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cryer later described how he viewed the pay imbalance while negotiating his own contract.

“He’s in the midst of falling apart in every way that I can imagine, and he’s renegotiating his contract for another year of a show that I’m supposed to be on, too,” he said, according to People.

He compared Sheen’s position to that of a dictator whose erratic behavior had made other countries willing to pay heavily to keep him satisfied.

Taylor said Cryer “quadrupled his salary” during contract negotiations, while she was not offered a comparable increase

“The dictator of North Korea was a guy named Kim Jong-Il. He acted crazy all the time and thus got enormous amounts of aid from countries who were so scared of him that they would shovel money at him,” Cryer said.

“Well, that’s what happened here. [Sheen’s] negotiations went off the charts because his life was falling apart. Me, whose life was pretty good at that time, I got a third of that.”

Cryer also said CBS had a reason to spend so heavily on Sheen, explaining that the network had already “pre-sold a couple extra seasons” of the comedy.

Sheen was ultimately fired from Two and a Half Men in 2011 after publicly attacking creator Chuck Lorre. Ashton Kutcher later joined the cast as his replacement.
