Ana Walshe: Husband’s Murder Trial Postponed for Competency Evaluation

The trial of a Massachusetts man charged with the death of his wife in 2023 has been postponed while he undergoes a competency evaluation.

The trial of Brian Walshe, charged with the murder of Ana Walshe, was originally scheduled to commence on October 20. However, his legal team requested an assessment to verify his competence to face trial, a move that prosecutors contested, as reported by WBTS.

Ana Walshe, a 39-year-old mother of three, went missing on January 1, 2023, a fact highlighted shortly after by CrimeOnline. Her body has not been located, yet prosecutors accuse her husband of her murder and of deceiving authorities regarding her vanishing.

Brian Walshe alleged that Ana had to urgently travel back to Washington, D.C., on January 1 for work purposes, but failed to notify her employer until three days later, on January 4. Her workplace, which was the first to alert the police to her absence, reported no such emergency.

Additionally, Walshe is accused of conducting internet searches on topics such as body dismemberment, blood cleaning methods, and the possibility of prosecution without finding a body. Around the time of Ana’s disappearance, he reportedly purchased $400 worth of cleaning supplies.

Blood was discovered in the basement of their family home, accompanied by a bent knife suspected to be bloodstained. Prosecutors also uncovered a hacksaw and a bloodied rug at a Peabody transfer station, approximately 45 miles from where the Walshes lived.

As per WBTS, a conference, initially planned for Tuesday, and the trial itself have been postponed. Walshe’s attorneys expressed “grave concerns about the defendant’s ability to intelligently and meaningfully participate in the trial,” prompting the request for his evaluation.

Part of the request stemmed from a stabbing in jail last month, they said, but prosecutors noted that Walshe was back in his cell shortly after and there were no medical records to back up an competency concerns.

Nevertheless, the judge ordered a three-week evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital with a competency hearing scheduled for October 27.

Walshe is charged with first degree murder, intimidating a witness, juror or police or court official, and disinterring a body. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
