In a dramatic courtroom scene, a Florida man accused of a double homicide left the court on the day he was set to admit guilt.
Reginald Louis Jackson, aged 40, faces multiple charges including two counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and robbery. These charges are linked to the 2013 slayings of 69-year-old Annette Anderson and her grandson, 20-year-old Tyrone Lenard Walker Jr. Jackson was present in a Miami-Dade courtroom on Wednesday, where he was anticipated to plead guilty alongside his co-defendant, Roderick Martin, who is 39 years old.
The proceedings took an unexpected turn when Jackson realized his mother was absent from the courtroom audience.
Local station NBC affiliate WTVJ captured the incident on video, showing Jackson’s emotional reaction. According to their report, both Jackson and Martin were charged in connection to the double homicide and were expected to enter guilty pleas. The plea agreements proposed a 40-year sentence for Jackson and a 25-year sentence for Martin.
These agreements were intended to conclude a lengthy legal process and eliminate the necessity of a trial, almost 13 years after Anderson and Walker were allegedly found on July 16, 2013. The victims were discovered bound and gagged, with fatal gunshot wounds to their heads, in a Miami home. Anderson served as a minister at Jesus People Ministries, while Walker had recently relocated to pursue electrical engineering at ITT Institute, working part-time at Burger King.
On the day of the hearing, Jackson and Martin arrived in court handcuffed together, even though their cases were not originally on the docket. The judge agreed to proceed, anticipating guilty pleas. However, these plans fell apart when Jackson noted the absence of his family, particularly his mother, leading to a halt in the proceedings.
As he started yelling profanities in court, Jackson said his grandmother was at one of his hearings and died three months later. He said it was the last time he ever saw her, and he did not want to take a chance at not seeing his mother again.
“I want my mom,” he said, according to WTVJ.
While still handcuffed to Martin, Jackson started walking out of court, and their plea deals were rejected. Jackson and Martin remain in custody and are due back in court on May 5.
