HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. – Authorities have detained 26-year-old Joshua Daniel Williams from Ocala following allegations of exploiting a senior by misappropriating cash and debit card details during his tenure as a home health aide.
Back in June 2025, a family member alerted the High Springs Police Department about unauthorized transactions exceeding $2,500 on multiple debit cards used by the victim. Despite replacing the cards several times due to suspicious activity, the fraudulent charges persisted. Additionally, the relative noted that $1,465 in cash mysteriously disappeared from various spots within the victim’s residence over several occasions. Interestingly, these cash losses ceased after Williams ended his employment with the victim.
The investigation revealed a series of unauthorized expenses between April 30 and June 7. These included car and insurance payments, purchases at Walmart and various restaurants, a Netflix subscription, a phone plan, and roughly $100 in Cash App transfers. Moreover, the victim’s debit card was used to fund a three-night stay at a Holiday Inn Express in Gainesville.
On August 1, Williams was interviewed by a High Springs Police Department officer. During the conversation, following a Miranda warning, Williams identified himself as a nursing student at Rasmussen University in Ocala and an employee of HCP Home Health Agency, assisting clients with household duties. He denied accessing the victim’s personal belongings, including dressers and purses, or taking any cash or credit cards. However, he confessed to using the victim’s debit card for his car insurance and transferring money to a Cash App account associated with his late grandfather.
Initially, Williams claimed he had used the victim’s card only once. Yet, he later admitted to utilizing the card “once or twice” for car payments and to cover the hotel expenses.
Williams reportedly admitted to taking pictures of debit and credit cards that he found in the victim’s wallet inside her purse. He reportedly said he stole from the victim because he was “low and did not have a job” and had to drive back and forth from Ocala to High Springs.
Williams has been charged with grand theft, exploitation of an elderly victim, fraudulent use of a debit or credit card, and using a two-way communications device to facilitate a felony. He has no criminal history, and Judge Joy Danne set bail at $20,000.
