Man Immediately Stabbed 12-Year-Old Cousin Over Gaming System Dispute, Police Say

Andrew Zargazeta (Broward County Jail).

A 24-year-old Florida man is accused of stabbing his 12-year-old cousin with a kitchen knife after an argument erupted over the use of a gaming console, authorities said.

Andrew Zargazeta faces a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to the Sunrise Police Department. A probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime says officers were called Thursday to the 12800 block of Vista Isles Drive after receiving a report of a knife-related incident.

Police said they arrived to find the child with a stab wound to the hip. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, and doctors determined the injury was not life-threatening, local ABC affiliate WPLG reported.

The boy’s great-grandmother told investigators she heard the cousins arguing about a gaming console and stepped in to separate them. She said she did not see either person holding a knife at that point.

Moments later, the great-grandmother reportedly saw the boy walking outside. When she followed him, he told her he had been stabbed.

During an interview with police, the victim said the dispute became a “heated argument” after Zargazeta allegedly used the gaming console without permission. The child told officers Zargazeta took a knife from a kitchen knife block but returned it after their great-grandmother intervened, according to the affidavit.

The victim said he then started walking to get the gaming system when Zargazeta allegedly grabbed the knife again and “immediately stabbed him in the right hip area,” investigators wrote in the affidavit.

Cops recovered the knife behind the TV.

Zargazeta made a statement to police, but it was redacted from the affidavit. Officers arrested him and booked him into the Broward County Jail on a $20,000 bond. He remained there as of Monday afternoon. His next court date was not listed.
