An Illinois mother is accused of leaving her two young children — one of them a 1-year-old who depends on a feeding tube — with people she had only recently met while she allegedly spent hours riding around in a vehicle while intoxicated, authorities said.

Nakeia Morris, 25, was booked into the Sangamon County Jail on a DUI charge, according to jail records reviewed by Law&Crime.

Morris is also facing a charge of endangering the life or health of a child, Springfield ABC affiliate WICS reported.

The incident began Sunday evening at Comer Cox Park in Springfield, Illinois, where Morris reportedly crossed paths with at least two people as their children played together. Those individuals later invited Morris, her 7-year-old daughter, and her 1-year-old son to their home so the children could continue spending time together.

Around 10:30 p.m., Morris allegedly walked out of the residence on the 2500 block of Yale Boulevard without telling the homeowners where she was going. The residents said they attempted to reach her afterward, and at 2:54 a.m. Monday, she allegedly sent a text message claiming she was heading back.

Investigators, however, say Morris was not actually returning at that time.

By about 5:10 a.m. Monday, the residents contacted police and reported that the children had been left with them and their mother could not be located. Officers responded to the home and were briefed on what the callers said had unfolded overnight.

Making matters worse, the 1-year-old boy had a feeding tube, per WICS, and the residents didn’t know his medical needs or when he had last eaten.

About 40 minutes after police were called, officers spotted Morris’ vehicle. Morris was allegedly riding in the vehicle’s passenger seat and appeared intoxicated.

Officers asked her about her children, to which she reportedly replied that she did not have any. She was arrested and booked into jail.

A court date was not immediately set for Morris, according to jail records.
