Sofia Todorov, currently 20 years old, appeared at the Broward County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday. She was subsequently taken into custody and faces charges of vehicular homicide along with two counts of reckless driving. The collision occurred on the morning of May 19, 2024, when Todorov allegedly drove her Lexus at a speed of 124 mph, striking a minivan occupied by 65-year-old Lorene Seeler Young and her 84-year-old mother, Virginia Baker, who was behind the wheel.
Tragically, Young lost her life in the crash, and her mother suffered injuries described as “permanent and continuing,” as detailed in court records obtained by Law&Crime.
Local news outlet WPLG aired footage of Todorov’s court appearance on Wednesday. During the proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence showing that the Lexus’s “black box” recorded a speed of 124 mph just moments before the fatal collision that claimed Young’s life.
Todorov’s lawyer contended that his client was sober at the time of the incident and characterized the crash as an unfortunate “accident.”
Todorov’s defense attorney argued that his client was not under the influence, and that the alleged crash was an “accident.”
In addition to criminal charges, Todorov and her mother are being sued by Young’s children and Baker, calling Todorov’s mother “vicariously liable” for her daughter’s alleged conduct because she let her drive the car.
At the hearing, a judge issued a bond of $65,000 and ordered that Todorov avoid driving any motor vehicles if she is released. She was also asked to surrender her passport and wear an ankle monitor. Todorov remains in custody at Broward County Jail.
