An unsettling incident in Indiana has brought serious charges against a 37-year-old woman, who is alleged to have attempted to harm a 1-year-old child by sitting on the child’s face. Authorities were informed that the woman, identified as Kendra Lee Proctor, had expressed a disturbing intent to “sacrifice” the young child.
Proctor was apprehended on Sunday and now faces charges of attempted murder and molestation of a child under the age of 14, according to records accessed by Law&Crime.
Responding to a 911 call concerning a potential child molestation, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at a residence on the 3500 block of Baltimore Avenue around 10:30 p.m. on January 18, as reported by the Indianapolis Fox affiliate WXIN. The call indicated a disturbing scenario that warranted immediate attention.
Upon arrival, officers encountered Proctor along with an adult female witness and the 1-year-old victim. The witness reported to the officers that she had caught Proctor in the act of sitting on the child’s face, with Proctor being unclothed from the waist down, according to Cincinnati CBS and CW affiliate WKRC.
The witness recounted to the police that she and Proctor had been watching a religious film which seemed to impact Proctor’s behavior. Following the movie, Proctor reportedly began to act strangely, posing odd questions about what they had just watched. When the witness went to check on the child, she found Proctor engaged in the alarming act, while the child was described as “screaming bloody murder.”
In response to the shocking scene, the witness took physical action against Proctor, as reported by WXIN, stating she “beat the f— out of” Proctor to intervene and protect the child.
Emergency medical personnel examined the victim at the scene and determined she was physically unharmed.
In an interview with police, the witness recalled that after she walked in on Proctor and the child, Proctor said, “I thought this is what you wanted me to do,” and “this is what I’m supposed to do.”
Investigators reportedly determined that Proctor may be schizophrenic. They also learned from the witness, whose discussion with investigators was recorded, that Proctor may have molested the 1-year-old victim.
The witness also claimed that Proctor had placed a hand over her mouth in an attempt “to sacrifice her.”
During a post-Miranda interview, Proctor allegedly confirmed that she tried to kill the child, explaining that she hoped killing the child would cause the adult witness to kill her. However, when pressed for further details, Proctor was reportedly unable to provide a coherent response.
Proctor also reportedly confessed to police that she had made statements about wanting to sacrifice the 1-year-old.
Proctor was transported and booked into the Marion County Jail where she was being held without bond as of Wednesday morning.
