LOS ANGELES — Two people lost their lives and six were injured during a mass shooting in a downtown Los Angeles area bustling with parties overnight, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Monday near 14th Place and Griffith Avenue, reported the Los Angeles Police Department. It appears several parties were ongoing in the vicinity at that time.
LAPD officers were on patrol in area around 11 p.m. Sunday when they saw someone going into what they believe was an unauthorized party.
An estimated fifty individuals were attending the party that officers subsequently dispersed and cleared. One individual was taken into custody for gun possession.
A few hours later, police returned to the scene for a shots fired and found eight people hit by gunfire.
Details about what exactly happened were limited, but a man died at the scene and a 52-year-old woman was taken to the hospital where she later died.
Of the six people injured in the shooting, two sustained critical injuries. According to police, some victims were taken to the hospital by ambulance, while others arrived on their own. The ages of the injured range from 26 to 62 years old.
Judner Derisso, the father of the man who was killed, identified his son as 29-year-old Gregory Derisso.
A motive for the shooting has not been determined. It’s unclear if anybody has been arrested.
