Major Marvel news has surfaced about the long-anticipated MCU sequel “Black Panther 3,” with David Jonsson set to step into the legacy role of T’Challa.
Chadwick Boseman first brought T’Challa to life in “Black Panther,” and the character was honored with deep emotion in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” following Boseman’s death in 2020. Jonsson, known for roles in “Industry” and films including “The Long Walk,” is now expected to play T’Challa II — the son of T’Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), introduced as a child in the closing moments of “Wakanda Forever.”
The reveal also came with a date fans can circle on the calendar. Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker behind “Sinners” and the director returning for his third “Black Panther” installment just months after winning the Academy Award for best original screenplay, confirmed that “Black Panther 3” will arrive on December 15, 2028.

Coogler made an enormous impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2018 with “Black Panther,” a landmark film centered on Boseman’s Wakandan prince, who had previously debuted in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” After the death of T’Challa’s father, the king of Wakanda, in that crossover film, T’Challa is called to assume the throne. His path is complicated by the arrival of Erik “Killmonger” Stevens (Michael B. Jordan), his estranged cousin, whose claim and ambitions threaten Wakanda’s future.
Boseman’s sudden death in August 2020 from complications related to colon cancer — an illness he had kept private, including from Coogler — was one of Hollywood’s most devastating losses in recent memory. It also left the “Black Panther” sequel facing an impossible creative challenge. Rather than recast the role at the time, 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” opened space for mourning, depicting T’Challa’s funeral and allowing Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) and Shuri (Letitia Wright) to process their grief as Shuri ultimately carried the legacy forward.
The “Black Panther” franchise carries a profound emotional weight, and no actor can replicate exactly what Boseman brought to T’Challa. Still, Jonsson’s casting signals a meaningful new chapter for the character’s legacy. With Coogler once again guiding the story and the announcement emerging from San Diego Comic-Con, “Black Panther 3” appears to be moving ahead with a steady creative hand.
