A deadly shooting incident has led the University of New Mexico to implement a shelter-in-place order at its central campus in Albuquerque on Friday morning.

According to officials, the UNM police were alerted to gunfire at the Casas del Rio (Gila) student housing complex, which is situated at 420 Redondo Dr NE, on Friday. Upon their arrival, officers found two individuals with gunshot wounds. One person succumbed to their injuries, while the other suffered wounds that were not life-threatening.

The suspect remains at large and may still be on campus, UNM said in the alert.

A Lobo Alert was distributed through social media shortly after, at about 6:17 a.m. local time, instructing individuals to stay clear of the central campus, which was subsequently closed.

“Subject with a firearm is at large, police are on scene. If on campus, continue to shelter in place,” reads the latest alert, sent just before 7 a.m. local time.

The university first sent an alert about the shooting around 3:27 a.m.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are on scene and actively investigating. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call UNMPD at 505-277-2241.

A student housing building was also the site of a shooting at the University of New Mexico in 2022, when a group of students attempted assault a basketball player from New Mexico State University, allegedly as revenge for a previous argument. Court documents indicated that the UNM students pointed a gun and attacked the athlete, after which he fired back and struck one of his attackers fatally.
