WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio is receiving treatment for injuries described as not life-threatening after being involved in a car crash Sunday morning in Toledo, her office said.
Kaptur, 80, was riding as a passenger on her way to a church service when the vehicle she was in was hit, according to a statement from her office. The congresswoman is “active, alert” and expects to resume her full schedule soon, the statement said.
Because the House is in its summer recess, Kaptur was not scheduled to be in Washington this week.
Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in the history of the U.S. House, is again facing former state Rep. Derek Merrin in a closely watched race for her seat. In 2024, she narrowly defeated him by just over the 0.5% threshold that would have required an automatic recount, while a Libertarian candidate drew about 4% of the vote.
Her office said Toledo police and fire first responders arrived quickly and that medical personnel assisted those involved in the collision. The statement added that the office is awaiting any further details from Toledo police as the investigation continues.
The Toledo Police Department’s traffic division did not immediately respond to an inquiry from The Associated Press.
