After more than a decade marked by heartbreak, betrayal and unimaginable grief, Kaitlin Palmieri finally got her happy ending.

The 40-year-old school psychologist from Long Island married this spring to Sean, her soulmate who was once just a high school acquaintance, beginning a joyous chapter that had once seemed unreachable.

But her journey to ‘I do’ wasn’t just complicated. It was nearly cursed, as she calls herself ‘luckiest unluckiest girl in the world’.

Palmieri was just about to turn 30 when her boyfriend Mike, whom she described as ‘a literal saint’, died in a freak accident at her birthday party.

He was found floating face down in the pool and placed on life support. Doctors later discovered he had broken his neck.

‘It was undoubtedly the worst experience I had faced at that time,’ she recounted. ‘We still aren’t sure what exactly transpired. It was likely a diving accident, yet no one actually witnessed it. He was healthy, and it was purely tragic.’

After a long period of healing and therapy, Palmieri discovered love once again with a man named Eric. They moved in together, got engaged in December 2019, and set their sights on a small summer wedding. Tragically, on August 22, 2020 – the day they were to wed – Eric suffered a fatal heart attack.

‘They (doctors) told me he had a bad heart. Like a Black Widow-type condition. No symptoms, no signs. He was perfectly healthy. It was just sudden,’ she said.

‘The doctors said he had signs of past heart attacks. But there was no way to know unless he had open heart surgery. I didn’t even know something like that could happen.’

That loss could have broken her. But what came next changed everything.

In November 2023, on what would have been Eric’s birthday, Palmieri made a chilling discovery.

She came across an Instagram post from a woman who had previously messaged her about a grief blog she wrote.

The woman posted yellow heart emojis in a tribute to Eric – a detail that hit Palmieri hard.

‘Yellow was my favorite color. That was my thing with him. It p***ed me off more than anything,’ she said.

She messaged the woman for clarification. The response she got turned her world upside down.

‘She told me she’d been seeing him since basically the beginning. Since April 2019. That was before we were even engaged. She said they slept together whenever he was in Arizona for work,’ Palmieri said.

Even more devastating: the woman provided proof.

‘The last messages he sent her were two weeks before our wedding,’ she said. ‘They were disgusting. Sexual. I was beside myself. I couldn’t believe it.’

As she began to go public with her story, more women came forward.

‘I met a couple of his exes. One of them is married with kids now. She told me he cheated on her, too. Another one said they were sleeping together up until January 2020 and she was traveling to see him while we were living together.’

The betrayal cut as deep as the grief.

‘I was grieving someone I thought I knew. But that person never existed. It was a total mindf**k,’ Palmieri said.

‘It made me question everything. Was he two people? Was anything we had even real?’

For a while, she swore off dating. ‘I went on like one date a year for three years. I was solidly single,’ she said.

But now, after years of unthinkable grief and trauma, Palmieri has finally found her happy ending.

She married her husband, Sean, this spring in a quiet courthouse ceremony. A month later, they hosted a backyard party with friends and family. It was low-key, heartfelt, and just right.

She sweetly captioned a photo she shared to Instagram of their celebrations, ‘the luckiest unluckiest girl in the world’.

‘I had no desire to do the whole wedding thing. And thank God he didn’t either,’ Palmieri told DailyMail.com. ‘I didn’t know how I’d feel. I didn’t know if I was going to have a mental breakdown. So I had to break it up into two events. But it ended up being perfect.’

Palmieri reconnected with Sean through a dating app in January 2024. They had gone to high school together but hadn’t kept in touch.

‘It was platonic at first. Just like, “Oh hey, I remember you!” But we had mutual friends, and once we started hanging out, it was just like… when you know, you know,’ she said.

By June, they were talking about marriage. By Christmas, they were planning a spring wedding.

‘It was very transactional,’ she laughed. ‘I said, I have spring break. You wanna do it then? It was mature, it was adult. And it was exactly where we were at.’

They used rings from her family. The night before the ceremony, Sean surprised her with an engagement ring.

‘It was really sweet,’ she said. ‘I didn’t want any of the big proposal stuff. Eric had proposed in Central Park with our families there. It was this big to-do. His family flew in from all over the country. Every friend I’d ever met was at the bar afterward. It was like a show-stopping proposal.’

She explained: ‘That’s why I wanted nothing to do with any of that with Sean.

‘After what happened with Eric, I didn’t want the spectacle. I wanted something real, quiet and grounded. And thank God, Sean felt the same.’

Sean, she says, has been a pillar.

‘He’s annoyingly healthy,’ she joked. ‘He gives me space to grieve, to be angry. He was the first person I called when I found out about the second woman. And he was like, “Of course you can call me.” No jealousy, no ego.’

‘He just handles it better than I probably would. I guess when you’re that secure in yourself, you don’t feel threatened by someone’s past,’ she added. ‘He’s just a good man.’

Though she still struggles with anxiety and PTSD, Palmieri says she feels safe with him. ‘You don’t have to be healed to be happy. That’s what I’m learning.’

'I never thought I'd be here. I thought I was done. But somehow, here I am,' Palmieri told the Daily Mail

‘The wedding was hard. I was a disaster, honestly,’ she admitted. ‘I didn’t want to talk about it. I didn’t want to plan it. I bought my dress the week before. I couldn’t go shopping with people. I had to protect myself.’

She credits therapy, medication, and her support group with helping her navigate the emotions.

‘There were days where I felt okay. And others where I felt paralyzed,’ she said. ‘I’m in constant therapy. I’m trying ketamine treatment this summer for PTSD.’

As for the future?

‘I try to take it day by day. I’m terrified of making plans. Excitement is hard for me. But I feel really lucky,’ she said. ‘I never thought I’d be here. I thought I was done. But somehow, here I am.’

For anyone struggling with grief, she has one message: ‘The best feeling wasn’t when I was “over it”. It was when I wasn’t alone anymore. There is help. There are people. It can get better.’
