Australians are being advised to stay ahead of ‘porch pirates’ by using parcel lockers and other strategies to ensure the safe receipt of their deliveries.

Rather than getting packages delivered to their home where they’re easy for thieves to steal, using parcel lockers which are often at a post office is an easy option.

These parcel lockers offer the convenience of collection at any time, without the need for the post office to be open.

Experts are urging Australians to download the AusPost app, which enables users to track their deliveries in real-time.

The app also facilitates redirection options, such as having parcels left at a local post office or in a designated safe spot.

“If a parcel is stolen after delivery, it becomes a matter for the police. However, we encourage customers to consider our secure delivery options to minimize this risk,” stated Kevin Zuccato, General Manager of Group Security at Australia Post.

He added, “We understand customers are eagerly awaiting their parcels, especially as Christmas approaches, so please stay vigilant. Anyone suspecting mail theft should contact local police or CrimeStoppers.”

Chief Executive of CrimeStoppers Victoria, Stella Smith, said thieves strike quickly, with a rise in thefts around Christmas.

“Simple steps like choosing secure delivery options and reporting any suspicious behaviour can make a real difference. If you have footage of suspicious activity or information about a theft, share it with CrimeStoppers to help prevent further incidents.”

They were previously cut, with posties only delivering Monday to Friday.

Christmas post deadlines for packages

To avoid disappointment, shoppers are being told to stick to these cut-off dates to guarantee arrival by Christmas Day.
