The Gold Coast is facing a decrease in volunteer numbers, which is causing concern about the city’s ability to manage large events, such as the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This shortfall poses a significant challenge, as major events rely heavily on volunteer support.
According to a recent city report, only 11 percent of residents on the Gold Coast currently volunteer. Glenn Tozer, Chair of the Lifestyle Committee, stated this figure is “just below the average” and suggests there is “a bit of room for improvement.”
The success of events such as Supercars, marathons, and festivals hinges on the dedication of volunteers, she said.
Avril Harris from Experience Gold Coast highlighted that volunteers are essential for many events, as their absence would make it difficult to organize these occasions. The Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games will need a significant number of volunteers, similar to the 45,000 required for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
“I think its a great thing to do, that’s actually how I started, volunteering, when my kids went through the Eisteddford. It just gives you such joy,” Nicci Wilson from the Gold Coast Eisteddford said.
In response to the declining numbers, efforts are underway to encourage greater community involvement.
Tozer said he hopes that “people can kind of dip their toe in the water over the next couple of years” to lift volunteer rates before 2032.
