Spanish search and rescue teams have found the body of an American hiker who went missing in the Pyrenees last month.

The remains of 27-year-old Cole Henderson were found on Monte Perdido’s north face, the third-highest mountain in the Pyrenees, as confirmed by Spain’s Guardia Civil to CNN on Tuesday.

The location where Henderson was found on Friday afternoon posed access challenges, prompting specialist teams to use a crane for airlifting his body out.

Authorities had been working on the theory that Henderson may have tried to climb Monte Perdido, which stands at 3355 metres high.

The route is rated as “Peu Difficile” (PD), meaning “somewhat difficult” by the climbing community.

While PD routes are often tackled without ropes, they may involve steep climbs or crevassed glaciers, often requiring specialized gear like ice axes or crampons.

The standard path from Torla, where Henderson’s vehicle was discovered, remained snow-covered in early July, as shown in footage shared on social media.
