The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting snowfall at elevations above 800 meters for tomorrow, and even lower at 700 meters on December 25.
This is notably unusual for the summer season, meaning that more than just intrepid hikers might have the chance to witness the snowfall.
Even Hobart’s Kunanyi, with its summit at 1,271 meters, could experience a dusting of snow.
However, at lower elevations, the snowfall is expected to transition into cold rain, accompanied by some small hail.
Hobart is forecasted to reach a high of 15 degrees Celsius on Christmas Day, with temperatures dropping to 8 degrees overnight.
Despite the chillier weather, UV levels remain elevated, so it is advised to use sun protection between 9 a.m. and 5:20 p.m.
Weatherzone reported that brief snowfalls were not abnormal for Tasmania’s highest elevations in summer, with falls recorded even a week ago.
“While the cold fronts that circulate the Southern Ocean tend to slip southwards during the Australian summer, the occasional pool of unstable polar air is always a chance to push northwards at this time of year,” the weather reporting site said.
“That’s what will occur this week, and it’s largely thanks to the jet stream â the swift-moving ‘river’ of air high in the atmosphere which generally blows from west to east.”
But the cold air is set to stay mostly south of the mainland.
